At Jim’s Fire Safety, we have an electric blanket testing service for both our commercial and domestic clients. If you run an accommodation service (hotel, boarding house, school camp, etc.) we highly recommend having all the electrical appliances on your property tested and tagged.
Electric blankets have a reputation for causing fires and electrical shock. This is usually down to wear & tear, or not following the manufacturer instructions. Ask one of our technicians to visit your home or business today and make sure your blanket is safe.

Electric Blanket Safety Check
Before we even think about electric blanket testing, make sure your blanket meets manufacturer standards. If you can avoid it, don’t buy a blanket online unless it is from a trustworthy distributor/brand. Electric blankets for sale in New Zealand must meet the AS/NZS 3550.2.17:2000 standard for the safety of household and similar electrical appliances.
If your blanket is more than 5 years old, we highly recommend a safety test or a replacement. The older the blanket, the higher the chance of damage.
We can complete a visual inspection of your device as well as a test with our portable appliance testing machines. When we complete checks for businesses, we work to the AS/NZS 3670:2010 standard for the in-service safety inspection and testing of electrical equipment. Although there is no set standard for domestic testing, we will follow the same procedure as the commercial testing in order to give you accurate and safe information.
Is it safe to sleep with an electric blanket on?
Our first piece of advice is to check the manufacturer instructions and follow them at all times. Some electric blankets come with an automatic shut-off if the device overheats.
We recommend that you always turn the blanket off before you sleep. This is the safest possible way to ensure you aren’t hurt during the night. When it comes to safety, we believe that even a small chance of fire is still a big reason to be as safe as possible. That’s why we offer electric blanket testing to all of our customers.
