If you run a business, you are required to make sure everyone in your building has access to functional fire protection equipment. At Jim’s Fire Safety, we complete fire extinguisher inspection services for businesses across New Zealand. Our specialised safety testing technicians are experts in fire safety and know everything you’ll need to make your business safe.
Fire extinguishers are your first line of defence from a fire. Without a working fire extinguisher available in your building, you may be exposed to uncontrollable flame. Aside from the obvious danger, you could also be penalised by local authorities for negligence.
In New Zealand, there are a range of different fire extinguishers available for businesses. It is important that you only ask trained professionals to complete fire extinguisher servicing and refills. Our Jim’s Fire Safety technicians know the difference between each extinguisher and how to make sure your business has effective protection.
Ask one of our talented team members to visit your business as carry out a fire extinguisher test. You have a responsibility to yourself, and those around you, to keep your building safe.
When to test fire extinguishers
At Jim’s Fire Safety, we carry out fire extinguisher maintenance according to the NZS 4503:2005 standard for Hand Operated Fire-Fighting Equipment. As an organisation, you need to select, install, and maintain your fire protection equipment according to this national standard.
According to the NZS 4503:2005 standard, all types of portable fire extinguishers need to be tested at least once every 12 months. This frequency can vary based on the nature of your business environment so you’ll need to consult with a professional to make sure you meet your requirements.
In ‘hostile’ environments, fire extinguisher inspections need to be carried out at least once every 6 months. There are a number of factors that can make your environment qualify as ‘hostile’ so please consult the standard or contact us to make sure everything is functioning correctly.
As a general rule, it is a good idea to adhere to a six-monthly interval to ensure safety.
For wet chemical and foam type fire extinguishers, there are extended service requirements. Every 3 years, there needs to be an extra examination (including a discharge test and recharging). Every 5 years, all types of fire extinguishers need to have a hydraulic pressure test to adhere to pressure vessel safety regulations. All tests need to be documented with a tag.
A test record needs to be attached to each extinguisher on a yellow inspection tag. A fire extinguisher tag should only be supplied and administered by a trained professional. Jim’s Fire Safety technicians are completely up to date with the national safety standards and can supply all the supporting documentation you will need for proof of compliance.
Fire extinguisher tagging is the best way to identify which appliances have been tested and passed. With an inspection tag, a quick visual check is all you need to find out when your equipment was last inspected. The durable fire extinguisher service tags will provide an accurate test record for years to come.
