When to test fire extinguishers

At Jim’s Fire Safety, we carry out fire extinguisher maintenance according to the NZS 4503:2005 standard for Hand Operated Fire-Fighting Equipment. As an organisation, you need to select, install, and maintain your fire protection equipment according to this national standard.

According to the NZS 4503:2005 standard, all types of portable fire extinguishers need to be tested at least once every 12 months. This frequency can vary based on the nature of your business environment so you’ll need to consult with a professional to make sure you meet your requirements.

In ‘hostile’ environments, fire extinguisher inspections need to be carried out at least once every 6 months.  There are a number of factors that can make your environment qualify as ‘hostile’ so please consult the standard or contact us to make sure everything is functioning correctly.

As a general rule, it is a good idea to adhere to a six-monthly interval to ensure safety.

For wet chemical and foam type fire extinguishers, there are extended service requirements. Every 3 years, there needs to be an extra examination (including a discharge test and recharging). Every 5 years, all types of fire extinguishers need to have a hydraulic pressure test to adhere to pressure vessel safety regulations.  All tests need to be documented with a tag.

A test record needs to be attached to each extinguisher on a yellow inspection tag. A fire extinguisher tag should only be supplied and administered by a trained professional.
