fire hose reel testing

At Jim’s Fire Safety, we carry out fire hose reel testing services for businesses.

Every business is required to provide a safe working environment for employees and guests. You can make sure your workplace is safe by asking us to come and test your fire protection equipment. This way, if a fire does occur in your building, your team will have access to functional equipment.

Fire hose reels are designed as a first response to a public fire. With a fire hose reel, you can contain the early stages of a fire and minimise damage in your building. Hose reels project water, so they are suitable for Class A fire involving paper, textiles, wood, plastics, and rubber.

They must not be used on electrical fires.

Fire hose reels are manufactured and installed in compliance with the New Zealand Building code, and maintained in accordance with the national safety standards. When you choose Jim’s Fire Hose Reel Testing, you’ll always meet the national requirements.

How often do I need fire hose reel testing?

At Jim’s Fire Safety, we test and inspect fire hose reels according to the current fire hose reel standard.  Presently, we comply with the NZS 4503:2005 standard for hand operated fire-fighting equipment. The standard dictates that a professional test must be carried out at least once a year. It is also recommended that a member of staff carry out monthly checks within your business.

According to legislation from the New Zealand government regarding Fire Safety and Evacuation of Buildings Regulations, any hand-held hose reel or other similar device installed in a building for fire-fighting by the building’s occupants must be maintained under the NZS 40532:2005 and NZS:4503:2005 standards. Every person who breaches this legislation is liable and may receive a $200 fine. You can incur further debt for each day the issue remains in breach of the standard. If an accident does occur in your building where there is no appropriate fire protection equipment available, your organisation will be vulnerable to further penalties or potential lawsuits.

You need fire hose reel testing to make sure your staff are as safe as possible and to protect your organisation from legal consequences.

Fire hose reels need to be manufactured in compliance with the AS/NZS 1221 fire hose reel standard. They are usually between 18 and 36 meters in length with a diameter of 13-25mm. If you are unsure of whether your hose reel meets manufacturing standards or if it is correctly placed, get in touch with our team. We’ll consult the standard and let you know what’s right.
