Fire extinguishers are a fantastic first line of defence against small fires. If you’ve had to use your fire extinguisher recently, it will need to be refilled.

In fact, pressure tests and refills are compulsory in commercial environments. The requirements for fire extinguisher servicing are set by the NZS 4503:2005 standard. It states that all types of portable fire extinguishers need to be tested at least once every 12 months. Further inspections, such as discharge and recharge tests, need to be conducted every 3 years. Hydraulic pressure tests are every 5 years.

Where to Recharge Fire Extinguishers

At Jim’s Fire Safety, we can take care of all of your fire extinguisher service requirements. We carry out all requirements under the NZS 4503:2005 standard, including discharge and recharge tests.
You cannot recharge a fire extinguisher on your own, it is important that this process is carried out by a trained professional. If it has not been executed properly, the next user could be left facing a fire with an extinguisher that won’t work properly.

During the fire extinguisher refill process, the technician will take the following steps:

  • depressurise the cylinder and remove the agent
  • dissemble valve
  • perform visual damage inspection
  • clean parts
  • insert fresh extinguishing agent
  • re-pressurise the unit
  • perform discharge test

This process needs to happen any time a fire extinguisher is used, as well as any time the NZS 4503:2005 stipulates.

You can check that your fire extinguisher has been tested and recharged by looking at the service tag. This tag will be attached to your device after it has been tested and will contain information about the technician, and the date the inspection was conducted.

If you’re wondering where to recharge fire extinguishers, you can always check your inspection tag to see who conducted the last test.

At Jim’s Fire Safety, we have a free reminder service to let you know when your next test is approaching. If you are running a business, you are required to have an inspection at least once a year. You don’t have to worry about remembering though, we will send you a notification when your re-test date is approaching.

Why do we recharge fire extinguishers?

Maintaining your fire protection equipment is really important.

  • If you own or operate a business, you must recharge your extinguishers to remain compliant with New Zealand safety standards
  • If an extinguisher has not been maintained, the next person to use it could be put in danger
  • Regular inspections help to catch problems or damage before it is too late

A proactive approach to fire safety is the only way to reduce the chance of an injury in your building. In addition to regular maintenance, we highly recommend that you give your staff basic fire safety training. Including how to operate a fire extinguisher safely.
